Assessment plays a critical role in the flipped classroom.

We conventionally use summative assessment to generate two types of data:

  • the aggregate learning across the class as a whole (class average), and
  • the relative position of each learner vis-a-vis the others (best, worst, top 15%).

In active learning that accompanies the flipped classroom approach, formative assessment that guides the learner during the journey is very important.
